In the modern society, anyone can grab their camera, press record and BOOM! They’re a Journalist.
Where will a Journalism degree take you when individuals run rampant with their devices recording information and positing it online as their own news stories. At this point in time, sites such as facebook are online forums for this idea of citizen journalism.
This idea of citizen journalism is formed as we collate information to create a collective intelligence online.
We began as “the audience“, however as more individuals become the content creators and prosumers, legacy media will have no-where to go. Freelance journalists and writers are the future of my degree. Right now, I am a journalist, writing a report on how to become a journalist as well as where this degree may take me.

Do you notice that the way you annotated your ‘news’ comes across in a format that is similar to Facebook? Your news was focused around you in a short set of announcements.
It’s also interesting that you say “please don’t fact check this” throughout your ‘report’. The internet may be a medium where gatekeepers are not required in order to contribute to the mass of information available online; however that does not mean the work isn’t fact checked in the process. Yes, gatekeepers have been removed as gatekeepers, and they have been replaced by the audience – those consuming, and commenting, calling out false statements, comments, and so on. Snopes for example hosts an array of articles which have posted false information (http://www.snopes.com/).
On another note, if you are going to pay $8 to park at the Tafe, why don’t you just park across past the botanical gardens? Only a 15 minute walk. Or if you’d prefer to park near the bus, the train station, and streets around *used* to be a good, free place to park.

I really love your take on this — Also, your podcast was super entertaining and got the point across (or a-chross hahaha i really hope you get this joke). I totally agree with you on how anyone can be a journalist, and I like how you mocked the idea in the process — however, I think citizen journalism has truly evolved into something that is worth more than just documenting one’s day, as many cases have involved people reporting real and important news through social media forms such as Twitter, for example: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/twitter-user-live-tweets-attack-before-pentagon-breaks-news-9749973.html . I don’t have much criticism on your post because you covered it pretty well in a concise manner, which I really enjoyed. Good job!
